Re: Emergency - crack in tub - how to fix???
scowol Oct 12, 2018 7:12 PM (in response to lindata)Yes, I've had this. A home repair is generally not in order. Call a professional plumber is my advice. If you want to do a home repair, google "fix a crack in tub" and there's millions of videos to watch. The Internet is going to be your best friend there...

lindata Oct 12, 2018 7:38 PM (in response to scowol)Goodness sake. We are in a bind here. Guests checking out tomorrow and new ones in. We have a very small window. I am asking if anyone has actually done this themselves. I realize full well I can google, but I am asking for advice of someone in real life who has actually done this.

twomoreyears Oct 12, 2018 8:50 PM (in response to lindata)lindata - I understand you are stressed over this, but if you are not getting answers it's because no one that has read your post has done this before. Getting grouchy at us for not posting an answer won't get your tub fixed.
Good luck!

lindata Oct 12, 2018 9:28 PM (in response to twomoreyears)Yes, I am pretty stressed. A little grouchy, yes, because I'm sure we all know how to google. I was seeing if anyone here had done this personally. If not, no worries! My husband is at Lowe's now. Just looking for personal rec's. If not, no biggie. I do know how to google. And I do know where the phone is to call a plumber. Lol!

Re: Emergency - crack in tub - how to fix???
vrdoctor Oct 12, 2018 10:36 PM (in response to lindata)What kind of tub is this porcelain/cast iron, fiberglass, or resin? Do you have more than one bathroom? Your best bet is to take that tub out of order and give the guest a discount for the inconvenience. I would definitely try to warn them in advance and give them some options.
For a repair, your best bet is to mix up a batch of 20 minute epoxy to do a temp patch on the crack. Make sure to clean the surface with rubbing alcohol so that there is no grease or grime or the epoxy won't stick. Let the epoxy dry for a few hours and it should hold water long enough to order a replacement tub and get bids. You can consider putting a fiberglass strip and building up a patch over the fiberglass and then sending it smooth if you have enough time. Caulk will not penetrate the crack enough to hold. If the tub is Acrylic/resin then scuff up the material with sandpaper before putting the epoxy on.

Re: Emergency - crack in tub - how to fix???
sapphiresteve Oct 13, 2018 9:28 AM (in response to lindata)If the tub is acrylic, you can get the powder and monomer, which when mixed will produce a paste which will both chemically adhere to the tub and fill the crack. This will be a "permanent" repair. Try to get the self-setting type which will create its own heat to catalyze the reaction. If you get the type that requires heat, it can be supplied by a hair-dryer.

twobitrentals Oct 13, 2018 1:16 PM (in response to lindata)I Called Lowe’s who immediately put me through to a company that exclusivemy repairs fiberglass tubs. So a call to them might be helpful. Ask for the contractors desk. He was in and out in about an hour. Cast $100.00.

u0999 Oct 15, 2018 9:04 AM (in response to lindata)There are companies that apply fiberglass fabric patch using epoxy then refinish the whole tub with white epoxy glaze. Done in about 1 day, should be about $400-500 but does not disturb plumbing. Looks new after that.
