Anyone Raising Interest With Pinterest?
I was wondering if anyone is using Pinterest to promote their vacation rental.
For those that don't know Pinterest it's a virtual pin-board website where you can add, amongst other things, photographs.
It's also the hottest social media thing at the moment.
More importantly the presentation is gorgeous.
You can't just sign up though, you have to apply for an invite, but I applied and was invited after just a few days.
Here's what I did.
My account name is rentmore and I created a board called "my vacation rental home" (as an example for you) and I posted some atmospheric photographs to that board. I also saved the board in the category "holidays".
You can see the results here http://pinterest.com/rentmore/my-vacation-rental-home/
As I said, eye-candy for potential guests.
That's a great URL too, easy to remember, does what it says on the tin. So think before signing up and creating boards!
As I said I think the presentation is lovely. It's frowned upon to be spammy so be as creative as you can. You can "pin" any image or video on the web so this could be stunningly good for showcasing places of interest, local towns, villages, golf courses etc. that are near to your vacation rental.
Other advantages are the "Post to Facebook button" and the "Twitter" button, so it's easy to spread the word (board).
It's just another way to make a great impression.

Those that are interested may like to look at another example of how to use this great visual marketing medium,
I have been photographing, advertising, and promoting vacation rental properties for nearly ten years and I believe Pinterest is one of the easiest to use, nicest to look at, most suitable, applications for this purpose and best of all it's free.
I hope you find this useful,
Regards. Alan
Hello again,
I have put together some information on how to use Pinterest to make your own infomercial.
This only takes around an hour and will increase your conversions.
You can see the article here

Is anyone else doing this?
Regards. Alan
Hello,
Here are the lateset stats for Pinterest in the form of an infographic from mashable.com
Users spending more time on Pinterest than Facebook now!
http://mashable.com/2012/02/25/pinterest-user-demographics/
If you are not using it these people can't find you or your property on it.
So, I am not formiliar with Pinterest at all. Is it safe? Can people take your pictures or postings and use them on Craig's List for a scam? I am gun shy now after being a victim and having my e-mail compromised by Phishing and my sites all closed down my HA. It took weeks to clear it all up. I don't know what is safe and what is not for advertising anymore.
Hello Iopbeach house,
ANY image on the internet can be copied if you know how and mark my words the bad boys know how. That includes your listings photo's on HomeAway and ANY other website that you advertise on.
Sorry to hear that you got taken by a scam but it is so easy to do. Copy any photo's, Craigslist ad, mobile phone and away you go.
If it is going to happen, it's going to happen and I don't think Pinterest will raise the odds of it happening, but that's just my opinion.
Good luck. Alan
If you are still not sure about Pinterest here is a really good video by Megan Auman on how to promote your "products" on the social media site.
For "products" read "your vacation rental"
Here is the link

Megan also stresses the importance of producing and promoting great product photographs.

Pinterest is definitely a new social media tool that is here to stay. But I'm still trying to figure out how to use it to book my cabin rental. It would still be good to get an account
I agree with rentmore. If you have great assets you will get more interest and views. I wonder if Pinterest also increase SEO ranking.

Hi rentmore!
I have started using Pinterest for my vacation rental and I have to agree that I love the look of the presentation! I get lots of repins and likes on some of my pins and nothing on others, but I haven't turned it into any real 'interest' in renting my home yet. Still, I think it's another great way to get out there, so to speak, and I do think Pinterest's rise in popularity is hard to ignore - and it's fun! I've started with creating a board for my rental, a board for waterfalls in our area and a board for birds that are here on our property - that one is the most popular - and I'm trying to brainstorm some ideas for new boards like scenic drives, popular hiking trails, local festivals, etc. You can check out my Pinterest page and see my boards here:
www.pinterest.com/ghdogwoodridge
Thanks for the info and I encourage everyone to try out Pinterest - after all it's free
!
Way to go.
I didn't know the first thing about the area where your property is located but now I know it has very beautiful waterfalls and some stunning birdlife.
Information is king, in a world of information.
If you add links to these boards when replying to enquiry emails you will kill your competition because you are conveying more information (and what great looking information it is) than they are.
keep it up
Regards Alan
I started some boards a few months ago and I can't figure out how people find them. When I do a search with the keywords ie: vacation rentals, cottage, colorado, none of my boards or pins show up?
Hello Sophie,
You are being too vague with you title and search. Google (or Pinterest for that matter) will not find you with a search term like vacation rental or cottage. Try making a board entitled - My Colorado vacation rental cottage - Then you would have a much higher chance of your board being returned in the serp.
To prove this point if you search - birds of dogwood ridge - you can see that Google returns this board in 1st and 4th place (once through Facebook and once through Pinterest itself). That's pretty powerful stuff. Maybe a birdwatcher is looking for a holiday on dogwood ridge!
I hope that helps.
Where can I see your boards?
regards alan
I mean when I search within pinterest, nothing comes up. I've put in tons of keywords in my description, etc. How can I send you link to my boards without sending a link that is signed into my profile?
Sophie,
First of all I will look at your boards and see if I can help.
Your account is pinterest.com/something
just reply with the something
although I think that you can just add the whole address in a reply
interesting. I'm about to have to learn more, since the local tourism site where I advertise my VR on has just included my home on pinterest.
I'm not quite clear on the concept just yet, or how it benefits me, but guess I'm going to find out!

I still have lots of concerns about Pinterest, especially after all the people that have found their pictures used on other site this week for advertisement. I read this article today http://ddkportraits.com/2012/02/why-i-tearfully-deleted-my-pinterest-inspiration-boards/ and decided I'm holding off until I figure out a way to watermark everything with my web address. Anyone know how to do that?
Hello,
As far as adding watermarks to your images you can do this using Googles image software, Picasa.
You can download it for free at http.picasa.google.com
You only need a Google account, which is also free.
Here is a tutorial for the watermarking process,
http://support.google.com/picasa/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=106193
As far as copyright issues go that is a deep hole to get into. I'm a professional photographer and I have photos on Pinterest. All carry a link back to my website. I figure that the more people that see my work the better. I guess that there are people who prefer to sue others than take photos.
We will see what happens with Pinterest.
As far as scams go, as I wrote before in this thread, anyone can copy any photos from the web and by placing ads on Craigslist or anywhere else can scam you, any other owners or potential guests. My major shock with these scams is that they use everthing from the same ad - photos, description, location, etc. I don't get why they don't just make it all up!
Alan, did you get the pm I sent a few days ago with my board link?
Hi Sophie,
No. I didn't know, but I do now. I have had a look at your baords. I can't reply by DM on my Ipad though. Can you email me through my website and I can let you know more.
Nice style by the way. Beautiful decor.

I've seen some decent results. I think Rentini is doing a good job trying to push social media on homeowners. they just started this contest: http://ow.ly/bVlV0 pretty neat way to get engagement if you ask me!
Hello Everyone,
We started pinterest with Villa Punto de Vista a few months Back, and have received great feedback and even a lead or two: Here is a link to our page. Please Follow us if you can!

We are looking forward to adding more pictures soon.
Any feedback would be great!
*Great link to the Pinterest Video by rentmore. Thanks for the link.
Best regards,
I have created a Facebook group for vacation rental owners to offer a place where we can discuss these sorts of issues as well as any other questions, concerns, suggestions. This group is not affiliated with any listing services and just serves as a place for us to communicate. It is a closed group so you need to request to "Join Group" (by clicking the button in the top right) then an admin with approve. This helps keep spammers from posting in the group. You can join by going to this page:https://www.facebook.com/groups/vacationrentalowners/
I am still just trying to figure out how to use it and market my property correctly. ![]()
