I just edited my VRBO listings and changed under Rates to add: Plus HI general excise & transient accommodation tax HI State Tax ID #W9998XXXX-XX
Maybe not the best place to show it, but seemed appropriate.
I'd suggest that all us voluntarily show our Hi State Tax ID on our listings. Shows we have nothing to hide and makes it even easier for them to verify we are paying.
I think it also would provide a sense of legitimacy to our potential renters. We have to place it at the rental anyway. Anybody see a downside?

Sounds very sensible to me

If it hasn't already been suggested, then I suggest we all resident and non resident email our thoughts to either the rep you vote for or represents the area you own in. Given the emphasis on the potential constitutionality of the non resident language please be sure you state your opposition whether targeted to resident or non resident owner. We should fight this before it gets out of committee.

Julie,
I am confident that Homeaway has the ability to see these Posts but feels constrained because they are a public company. We may not understand why they feel constrained, but the reality is what they feel, not what we feel.

Perhaps it's a good idea, as you've suggested, to prove legitimacy. But, David...do you think...or do you know if exposing this information could harm us...I'm thinking identity theft. A local contractor that I once used here told me that he stopped displaying his license # on the side of his truck because someone "used" his license # falsly. It only happened once...but he had to unravel a near law suit for a job that he did not perform...that was done by a guy from Mountain View ....who falsly used his Licence # to get the job. The guy walked off the job half way through....and there was some confusion, thereafter, that was easy to clear up. But, displaying his Lic # openly lead to "id theft". What do you think? Should we do this? I'm creeped out by all the cyber crime.
thanks anja, I personally think we should look into this further before posting this information on our sites.
This is BRILLIANT ! You are brilliant. Expertise in Law is exactly what was needed from the get-go. In my own testimony that I sent in, I implied that this could be seen as unconstitional...so I'm thrilled that you deposited this letter! I'm no lawyer...but the Bill seemed blatantly discriminatory. THANK YOU for this.
I believe it is an inaccurate statment. I was informed by a realtor that a private property owner in the State of Hawaii can manage their own (one unit/or house) property...PLUS...one more property (one unit/or house)....without being a realtor. So, this needs to be checked.
Aloha Anja
I really don't know, hence my asking. I can't think of much use for the ID. Not tied to my bank accounts other than on the payment checks. The only benefit would be to pay the taxes. Would that benefit anyone? I can see a contractor license being a problem. There have been reports of bogus use of same. Maybe leaving off the last couple of digits would render it unusable, but still useful for tax verification as it is coupled with our name? Renters have access to the number as we have to display the licenses. I just put out copies in the units and keep the originals in my office.
Maybe we'll get more imput.

Also being heard by the finance committee tomorrow is bill 2078:
RELATING TO TAXATION.
Requires that all advertisements and solicitations in any medium for transient accommodations conspicuously display the registration identification number. Requires that any advertisement or solicitation that appears on any website provide contact information for a local agent if the operator of the residential property resides off-island or out-of-state. Applies beginning January 1, 2013.
is anyone submitting testimony for SB2089, the Senate bill that is essentially the same as the house bill? Please remember to include that one also!
I was just lookin at the filed testimony on the bill and see that the Department of Taxation has come out in support of it. It's at http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2012/Testimony/HB1707_HD1_TESTIMONY_CPC-JUD_02-15-12_LATE_.PDF
