Think back to the last time you went on vacation: What was the first thing that you did upon arriving at the vacation rental or hotel? Perhaps you took a minute or two to look around, dragged your bags in from the car, and inevitably took a bathroom break.

How would have you felt if you reached for the toilet paper holder to find — alas— an empty roll? Would your first impression of the property be negative? Would you be more likely to notice other subtle imperfections? The answer is likely...yes.

While providing a week's worth of toilet paper, paper towels, and tissue might be a storage nightmare, at the very least, you should consider providing a few rolls/boxes to get your guests started. Our recommendation:

 

A starter roll of toilet paper in each bathroom
1 backup roll of toilet paper in each bathroom
1 box of tissues in each bathroom
1 roll of paper towels in the kitchen 

The key to supplying (or not supplying) paper products, as with many aspects of renting your home, is communicating with your guests exactly what to expect. Whichever items you select, be clear about what you provide and what you don't in your directions. Many travelers may be used to staying in hotels where new toilet paper rolls appear magically each afternoon. Your housekeeper should be able to supply and restock paper products, but if not, you can buy them in bulk at a big box store like Sam's Club or Costco.
